The Shrine of St. Aidan, Bamburgh

The Decoration of the Shrine to St. Aidan, Bamburgh

It is said that St. Aidan died whilst he was leaning against a beam, possibly in the baptistry, and this beam has since survived two fires. The location of this event is where the new shrine to St. Aidan has been erected. We were asked to carry out the gilding and painted decoration of the shrine by Dr. Donald Buttress LVO, D.Litt, MA, FSA, ARIBA, Surveyor Emeritus of Westminster Abbey, who designed the new structure. All metalwork was carried out by the eminent master blacksmith Don Barker.

Some elements were painted and gilded in the workshop and others on site.

The Right Reverend and Right Honourable John Sentamu conducted the service.
